Humbled Selby Eager To Prove He Belongs In NBA

May 28, 2011 2:29 PM

Former Kansas University combo guard Josh Selby, who worked out for the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday and Indiana Pacers on Thursday, has taken a humble, low-key approach into a month’s worth of individual drills with NBA teams.

“The biggest thing I need to show is I deserve to be here like everyone else,” Selby told nba.com after Thursday’s workout with Purdue’s JaJuan Johnson, Villanova’s Corey Fisher, Richmond’s Justin Harper, Michigan’s Darius Morris and Georgetown’s Chris Wright in Indianapolis.

“People were questioning me because of what happened at Kansas. I need to show what happened at Kansas wasn’t the real me. I was going through things, of course the injury (to foot) and suspension (nine games to start season). I’m just trying to showcase my game.”

Selby, who averaged 7.9 points, 2.2 assists and 2.2 rebounds a game during his freshman season, is completely healthy now. He showed that by recording an amazing vertical leap of 42 inches at last week’s NBA combine.

Markieff Morris Says Derrick Williams 'Not As Good As Advertised'

May 27, 2011 5:19 PM

Derrick Williams has a high opinion of his talents, and Kyrie Irving even said, “his transition to the NBA game will be easy.”

But Kansas forward Markieff Morris wasn’t completely sold on Williams, who had 27 points and seven rebounds in a loss to Kansas last season. “I didn’t think he was as good as advertised,” Morris said. “He got the benefit of the calls from the ref and we had to guard him different. He definitely had a good game against us, because we couldn’t guard him how we wanted to guard him, and that’s what happened.”

So when he hears that Williams is a lock to go in the top two, Morris said, “It’s still surprises me. What he did to Duke, he wouldn’t do that to me or my brother [Marcus]. I’m dead serious. He wouldn’t. At all. He’s good. But if we was to work out, I would go at him and I would be able to stop him more than people would expect, you know what I mean.”

Perry Jones Aims To Be No. 1 Pick In 2012 Draft

May 27, 2011 12:29 AM

Baylor coach Scott Drew is anticipating Perry Jones could make a freshman-to-sophomore leap like Blake Griffin did at Oklahoma. If that occurs, who knows, maybe Jones will go even higher in the 2012 draft than he would've in 2011.

For what it's worth, Jones said he wants to go No. 1.

"All the potential is there,'' Drew said. "He has to work on being aggressive and consistent. Some people think he takes a back seat or coasts. He has to keep his motor at a high level. I know his perimeter game will keep improving like Derrick Williams' did [at Arizona]."

As for Jones, he will be in the gym most of the summer.

"Somebody tweeted me that I could be top eight in the draft,'' he said. "I tweeted back, 'I want to be No. 1.' That's where the hard work and dedication come in.''

Texas' Thompson Embraces Possibility Of Playing For Hometown Raptors

May 22, 2011 3:16 PM

The Raptors have the No. 5 pick in the draft, and Tristan Thompson said it would a “dream to play for his hometown team.”

Thompson grew up a big fan of the Raptors. He recalls receiving autographs from Toronto stars Vince Carter and Rafer Alston as well as getting to know former Raptor and current Heat forward Chris Bosh.

“I think it (would) be a national headline, especially with Toronto the only NBA team in Canada and having a hometown kid come back,” Thompson said of going to the Raptors. “It’s almost like the Derrick Rose effect (of the Chicago native going to the Bulls) maybe times two.”

Alec Burks compared his game to that of a young Tracy McGrady.

"I'm like a young T-Mac when he was in Orlando," Burks said, referring to Tracy McGrady. "In his Orlando days, he was very versatile. He could shoot, pass, dribble. He did anything his team needed to win."

Burks led the Big 12 in scoring, averaging 20.5 points along with 6.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists.

Self Denies Criticizing Selby's Athleticism

May 20, 2011 4:55 PM

Asked about a HoopsWorld.com report that he criticized Josh Selby's athleticism to NBA scouts in hopes of damaging his draft stock, Kansas coach Bill Self told 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City on Wednesday that the story was "false as anything can be."

"You shouldn't use certain words over the airwaves, but that's absolute crap," Self said. "Josh is a very good athlete. Josh is one of the ones that we thought was one of the more athletic kids on our team. That's how rumors get started.

"A coach's responsibility is to promote his players, to put them in the best light they can possibly can be. If anybody were to ask me about Josh, they would hear nothing but positive things out of my mouth or anyone in our program's mouth."

Burks Drawing Interest Of Bucks

May 20, 2011 10:26 AM

Alec Burks, who led the Big 12 in scoring as a sophomore at Colorado during the past season, is one player drawing the interest of the Milwaukee Bucks as they prepare for the June 23 draft.

Burks was one of the first players the Bucks interviewed at the annual NBA draft combine being held in Chicago on Thursday and Friday.

"It was a great meeting for me," Burks said of his interview with the Bucks. "They liked me a lot. I liked their staff a lot.
"I liked their system, where they're going and their players."

The Bucks have needs at several positions, and shooting guard is no exception.

KU's Self Can't See Himself Coaching In NBA

May 18, 2011 7:35 PM

KU coach Bill Self was asked about possibly coaching in the NBA someday in an interview Tuesday with 610 sports radio.

“I think I’ve got a better job than two-thirds of the NBA jobs right where I’m at, at Kansas. I don’t see myself being a pro guy,” Self said.

“I don’t want to say never, but right now, I feel I’m a college guy. I’ve got such a great gig. The last two years, we’ve been good. We’ve been real good, but we haven’t done it (won NCAA title). There’s something inside, ‘We’ve got to do it again.’ That’s my total motivation right now.”
